FIND in a Box | Personal Review

New to film? This is the place to go. Want to get better with film? Also the place to go.

You know when someone tells you have to try something? I.E. a restaurant, an experience, destination, etc and they build it up so much that you’re inevitably disappointed? This is the OPPOSITE of that.

My very first wedding portraits on film. Not bad - but I sure didn't feel confident in what I was doing. Annnnd that 3rd image is out of focus because I didn't realize that film has a WAY shallower depth of film than digital does.

FIND (film is not dead) is basically a film workshop in a box and it’s made up of 400+ pages of PDFs & Videos so that you can become confident with gear, stocks, rating, metering, posing, personal work, and so much more. You literally get to behind the scenes and see how Jon works and then watch him explain the why. And if you’re on the go and need to look something up? No problem. There’s an online login that will give you access to the content anywhere.

I know what you’re thinking – “It’s probably so boring to just read information and not interact with people” And you’re wrong on both accounts. For one, the way Jonathan writes is incredibly entertaining – you won’t even realize how long you’ve been immersed in this goodness. And two, you get to interact with people via the exclusive Facebook group of other FIAB compadres. This means a warm welcome, instant friends, a place to ask questions, and zero judgment.

From my personal experience, the content and the online community has played a huge role in finding my voice through film and giving me the confidence to shoot with different stocks in a variety of situations because I’m no longer limited by my lack of knowledge. Before FIAB I was never “bad”, I just didn’t know exactly what I was doing and didn’t know I could push (literally) the limits I thought film had. Now I can walk into a session and know what I want the end outcome to look like and plan accordingly on the front-end to achieve that result. This means that now every family and engagement session is done completely on film which frees me up to do what I love most (shoot) and do less of what I hate (sit behind a computer).

So honestly I'd shout this from the roof tops forever for free but instead I became an affiliate. Jonathan worked it out so every time you purchase through my link, I get some cash in my pocket. This is what we call a win, win, win.

And one more thing, it’s usually $1,299 and even if it were double the price, I’d tell you to buy two because it’s worth every penny. However, another win for you, it’s on sale and there's new payment plans.

So get on it – click HERE.

And while you're at it, here's a short preview of different lighting situations that we were able to feel confident in because of FIND in a box.

Don’t forget that The Ordinary Workshop is coming up in September. Put your info here to be the first to know the details.

Why You Should Attend Creative at Heart

We’re always on the hunt for a Netflix/Hulu find to captivate us in our downtime. Our latest hook is “The Profit” where Marcus risks his time and money into businesses that are struggling. Most times they accept his offer of equity in their company and sometimes they don't - which we usually think is dumb. It's a riveting show folks and it's instigated some crazzzzy conversations over here.

It's a riveting show folks and it's instigated crazzzzy conversations over here. And by crazy I mean pretty normal. They consist of us discussing good conflict in reality TV shows to Nate deciding to crunch our numbers and both of us coming to the conclusion that calling Marcus isn’t the best way to improve our skills in photography, videography, and business.

BUT there are other outlets in which we better our skills and the administrative side of business. For example, Nate, looooves his podcasts. Entre Leadership is one he’s had on constantly – even when I’m trying to sleep on road trips. For me, I love watching Creative Live and reading blogs. For both of us, personal interaction through conferences and workshops has been one of our favorites. While we wouldn’t trade honing our skills at the Herrinton’s Video Workshop and Jeremy Chou’s Film Photography Workshop, there will always be a special place in my heart for the first one I attended - Creative at Heart.

At this conference, there’s an amazing line-up of speakers who represent all different aspects of the creative community. So it’s not solely photographers and it’s not based on a certain skill. While photography and videography is our sweet spot, getting outside of our specific realm and interacting with other creatives makes us a stronger business. From sessions, to Q & A breakout panels, to late night conversations with other women who “get it,” this conference reaches the spectrum of women who have dreams of starting a business or who are already established.

“Our heart's desire is to provide practical, inspirational and affordable education to those in the creative fields. Whether you've been in business for a few years, or your business is still a dream, our goal is to provide you with the tools you need to build a successful business and make those big dreams happen.  We want you to know that you're not alone. Our motto of 'Here's to the Creatives' reminds us to stand proud under a banner of community; to hold out a hand to your neighbor, to share & give & help & love. You see, it's always, always better when we're together.”

Doesn’t that make you feel like you’ve found your tribe? An instant community? Me too. Which is why I’m trying to convince Nate that I need to go to Denver July 24-25th :)

If you’re looking for a conference to inspire you catch your dream and connect with other creatives; this is it. I left with a greater understanding of why we we're in this business. I left knowing that quitting my day job was a reality. I left knowing that if I did quit my day job, that Nate would be okay with getting a pet - #ourdoghenry.

Registration opens tonight at 8 and there will be a 48 flash hour sale that you’ll want to take advantage of! Plus, Denver. (Vert Kitchen’s House Roast Turkey Sandwich. You’ll thank me later).

So text some friends – and set your alarm for 8pm EST. Let's channel our inner Leslie Knope and catch our dreams together!

How We Shot a Wedding and Were in the Bridal Party

Yesterday we shared Keren & Dylan's winter wedding. If you missed it, make sure to check out the swoon-worthy photos before continuing here! Today, we're dishing how we were in the wedding and shot it.

Yesterday we shared Keren & Dylan's winter wedding. If you missed it, make sure to check out the swoon-worthy photos before continuing here! Today, we're dishing how we were in the wedding and shot it.

When Keren announced her engagement, we were set on being in the wedding party and not shooting the day so we could enjoy ourselves the whole time. Keren, being the gracious person she is, didn't want to take that away from us and went on the hunt for a photographer. The more she searched, the more we realized that part of us enjoying her wedding was being able to capture it through our lenses. The turning point happened when I received the following text from Keren:

"That moment when you see a picture you love so you go to contact the photographer and realize it's your sister"

And that was it; we were in. We knew we would need another trusted shooter who could handle all the formal portraits: bridesmaids, groomsmen, family photos, etc. so Ashley Eiban stepped right up and did a fantastic job. It made our day so much more relaxed because there was a third set of eyes capturing everything. Even though Nate and I gladly matched the bridal party (I mean did you see those dresses?!) we didn't stand up with the bridal party during the ceremony for two reasons. One, Keren was okay with it. Two, even though we trusted Ashley to capture everything, it was more fun for us to photograph it.

Plus, I had some help from two more sisters who would grab a camera throughout the night. While everyone was getting ready, Kathryn would pause from doing Keren's hair and make-up to snap a few photos so I could be in them. Not to mention, she did it all while being 6 months pregnant!  Side note - Nate and I did get all ready before hand so we could capture everyone else getting ready and grab detail shots!

Having awesome help allowed us to celebrate and give speeches while getting some amazing behind the scenes photos. While we realize being in a wedding and shooting it will take on different forms depending on the couple, location, and your preferences, this one worked out magically for us!

Launch Party Recap

Who knew hosting a party online could be so much fun?! Last night was a serious blast. Not only did interacting with friends and family make us feel incredibly love, encouraged, and supported, but we got to do one of the things we love most - give gifts!

The idea for an online launch party came from attending one that Liz Cook held where I won a gift card. I was hooked. From then on I knew that this had to be the best way to launch a site – invite people to celebrate from their couch and give them presents. #winwinwin

So we did it. Three lynchburg friends crowded around our coffee table to help facilitate the party and there’s no way we could have done it without them! Ashley, Jenny, and Micah were able to keep up with everyone’s posts and help me keep my sanity. Through asking questions in the party, we got to learn about people’s first dates and seeing what outfit they would choose to live in forever. The answers made for belly laughs on this end and a Pinterest spree. Side note, I’m incredibly amazed by how stylish our friends are.

As much as a new brand and site is wonderful,  people are what it’s about. If people didn’t believe in us, we wouldn’t be here. If we didn't love people, we wouldn’t be here. So thank you. Thank you for believing in us. Thank you for all the posts, texts, e-mails, and love you send our way. We're in this for people and last night was another joyful reminder.

And one more gift before we tackle this glorious Wednesday. Congrats on your spoils Amanda H.! We can't wait to get your Mini Instax 8 to you!
